Can films France’s first live 3D concert
Can chalked up another first recently by filming France’s first ever concert to be broadcast live in 3D.
Originally home to the most prestigious art exhibitions in Paris, the Grand Palais played host to a very different event, Nuit Electro, a six hour live concert dedicated to electro music featuring some of the genre’s biggest acts including Laurent Garnier, Ebony Bones and Simian Mobile Disco. French broadcaster SFR chose to use the event to showcase their new 3D channel and CAN was enlisted to film the concert.
To fully capture the event we used four 3D camera rigs, one placed on stage, another on a Technocrane, an Element Technica Neutron mini-rig for tracking and one at the rear of the crowd for wide shots. Provided with priority access to the venue, we were able to place the cameras in the best locations, including on the main stage. This allowed us to capture fantastic close up action of the artists during their performances and crowd shots that made viewers feel part of the audience.
The impressive venue dressings, stage effects including beam lights and smoke and amazing dance performances all gave extra depth to the 3D effect and the carefully planned placement of the cameras meant that no aspect of the show was missed.
One challenge we faced was the changing light levels from the stage which meant the vision mixers were kept busy however as the quality of the broadcast proved, they were more than up to the task. Another problem was the sheer noise with most of the crew needing to use ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones!
Broadcast by SFR on their SFRMusic channel and online it was also available on demand via SFR’s ‘Neufbox’.
