Little Crackers

Brief: To film and produce a 3D episode of Little Crackers, a series of British originated comedies forming part of Sky’s Christmas line up for 2010. Created by and starring 12 of the nation’s most popular stars of comedy, this episode was written by and featured Meera Syal.
Set in 1970’s Britain, the episode features a seven year old Meera wanting to celebrate Christmas. The only problem is Meera’s parents don’t do Christmas. Seeing his daughter’s sadness, Meera’s dad takes her to see a very poor excuse for a Santa which leaves her feeling very unimpressed and dampens her Christmas spirt….until Uncle Satnam, a man with a big beard and taste for sherry and mince pies arrives!
Solution: Being the first drama that Can has shot in 3D, it presented our crew with some new challenges. Using RED One cameras meant that while the end result would look fantastic, shooting it would be difficult due to the heavy nature of the cameras which required the use of a large rig (an Element Technica Quasar). This meant setting up shots was much more time consuming and as the episode was mainly shot in a house, positioning the rig was more difficult than a studio shoot.
Fully embracing the idea of 3D, Director of Photography Chris Ross ensured that the episode made best use of the extra dimension and framed shots specifically to suit 3D. Meera Syal was very excited at the prospect of seeing her family recreated in 3D: “It’s going to be bizarre, isn’t it? But of course it’s exciting. There are a few magical effects and touches to the film, so it’ll bring some Christmas magic. I can’t wait to see the finished product!”
Result: Little Crackers began airing on Sky from the 19th December and was shown throughout the Christmas period. It marked another first for Can by being the first ever scripted TV comedy to be shot in 3D. To learn more visit: http://sky1.sky.com/little-crackers-about-the-show
